You may have began reading this blog and expected me to talk about how much I love running. Well let me tell you not only am I am not a big fan of running – I am not even talking about physically running.
I am talking about emotionally and mentally running.
I wanted to talk about this this week, because I know that like myself, many individuals struggling with food are innate runners.
You may be asking yourself, “What does Paula mean by this?”
I mean when shit gets uncomfortable, scary, not the way I want it to be, my automatic response is to run. I have seen this not only within myself, but also in EVERY SINGLE ONE OF MY CLIENTS.
Run into food on their plate.
Run into a new relationship.
Run into a drink.
Run into extra sleep.
Run into distraction with friends.
Run into shopping.
Run into a new career.
Run into a new house.
Run into living in a new country or city.
Ultimately, running away from yourself and running away from your life.
Another way of saying this is that you are essentially –
ESCAPING YOURSELF AND ESCAPING YOUR LIFE.
So how to you transition from being a runner to learning how to stay still?
How can you no longer escape your life?
First, is through acknowledging that you want to run to begin with. When you recognize your mind trying to take you out of the present moment and begin to tell you stories about how life would be so much better if you lived here, or quit this job, or had a different family, boyfriend, girlfriend or the classic one – WAS SKINNIER – things would be better – you know you are in a runner’s mindset.
So here is what you do:
(1)RECOGNIZE THIS WAY OF THINKING IS A COMPLETE LIE – A RUNNERS MINDSET
(2)CHOOSE TO NOT LISTEN TO THESE INNATE RUNNERS THOUGHTS ANYMORE AND COMMIT TO SHIFTING THIS WAY OF THINKING INTO ONE THAT IS ABOUT SELF-LOVE
(2)ADAPT NEW FORMS OF SELF-CARE INSTEAD OF SELF-HARM –THROUGH ESCAPING AND RUNNING ACTS
Here are some different forms of self care you can try instead of wanting to run:

(D)Talk To A Friend
(E)Journal
(F)Make A Cup Of Tea, Put On Some Soft Music and Light Some Candles
(G)Take A Bubble Bath
(H)Get some rest!
These are just some forms of self-care you could do for yourself when you are feeling like you want to escape and run away from the stressful situations in your life. Have patience with yourself and understand that this automatic way of being is going to take time for you to shift.
Remember the first step to any sort of change in your life is AWARENESS.
Without awareness things cannot shift the way you would like for yourself.
Have patience and persistence and soon your feet will be planted firmly on the ground and the need to run will shift.
What form of self-care can you do for yourself tonight? Let me know which one is your favourite in the comments below and why? Looking forward to reading about it!
