Getting to the HEART of it
How often do you think about your heart? I’m guessing few and far between. That little muscle that we overlook. The organ that sustains life.
It pumps blood throughout your entire body. It helps bring oxygen and nutrients to every part of you. It is a symbol for love and compassion. It is a source of healing energy, our innermost desires and our dreams. It houses our mind, balancing mental angst and it’s a representation of joy and excitement. The heart has so many meanings and so much importance in our lives, so why isn’t it our first priority to protect and nourish?
When our heart is weak, or blockages in the flow of blood start to occur, there are big consequences. Every organ system eventually becomes affected and as a result, so does our well-being. By taking action now, you can prevent negative effects in the future. Like I’m sure you’ve heard, your diet, exercise regimen, the environment, stress and many other factors play a role in heart health.
Here are a few health tips to keep your little ticker running its best:
1. Moderate cardio exercise. (I know I know, you say you don’t have time or you’re too tired. But who are we kidding? Be good to yourself & dedicate 30mins a day to live a longer, stronger life).
2. Reduce stress with yoga and meditation (10 mins a day is a good start).
3. Increase your water & fiber intake (make sure you are regular & hydrated).
4. Eat a diet rich in antioxidants.
• Increase your greens (spinach, kale, broccoli, any green veggie- you get the picture).
• Increase your berries (strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, etc.) as these help to strengthen the walls of your blood vessels.
5. Make sure you are getting enough omega 3 essential fatty acids in your diet.
• Foods to consider: wild salmon, flax seeds, nuts (almonds, walnuts, pecans), avocados.
6. Sleep! (at least 7-8 hours a night- rest does wonders for your health).
If you are kind to this little muscle & protect it the best you can, it will be kind to you too ☺
