I’m sure that you’ve heard a great way to distress is to refresh your brain. And I’m sure some of you have dismissed the idea completely, right? I’m here to tell you that this could be one of your biggest mistakes when it comes to living a happy and healthy life – and here’s why.
A recent survey by psychologist and self-help author Robert Epstein found that 25% of our happiness hinges on how well we’re able to manage stress. Just as our bodies do, the mind needs detoxing as well. Think about it. We cram it full of disturbing media messages. We strain our brains with workplace and daily life worries. And we certainly don’t give it enough rest.
All of us, at some point in our lives, will need a mental detox. So, if your mind is foggy and lacks general reasoning, or if you have a difficult time coming up with solutions to problems, then you are ready for one yourself.
Below are the five easiest ways to free your mind from distraction. These mental detox practices will help your brain perform at its peak, improving your overall well-being.
A great way to detox the brain is by moving your body. Exercise and other physical activity produce endorphins (chemicals) in the brain that act as natural painkillers. These endorphins also improve the ability to think clearer, which in turn, helps reduce clutter from the brain.
Planning your day in advance is the best way to fight mental confusion before it even occurs. The more organized you are, the better you feel.
Most of live busy lifestyles and take on more than what we can handle, so one thing in particular that most of us neglect when it comes to our health is rest. And by that, I mean resting both the body and mind. It’s important to make rest a priority as it relieves stress and mental confusion.
Mindfulness meditation, originally adopted as a Buddhist practice, has now become a mainstream form of therapy and is particularly effective in finding clarity and peacefulness within the mind. New to meditation? Find a quiet space alone, focus on your breathing, and work kindly with your barrage of thoughts.
Unfinished projects leave us feeling irritable and self-critical. As you tackle a project, commit to working on it exclusively until it’s done. You can certainly take breaks in between (in fact, I encourage you to take them), but don’t start a new project until the one you have already started is complete.
Refreshing your mind through these mental detox techniques is one of the healthiest things you can do for yourself. Furthermore, an important aspect of mental training is consistency. If you find one of these methods particularly useful then stick with it. The more you train your brain, the faster you’ll be able to refocus your thoughts.
