Why having a pet is good for your soul.

While this may just be an excuse to show off pictures of my adorable dog, I assure you that having her has changed my life.

I’ve always been an animal lover and my family has supported that passion by putting up with my attempts to rescue any stray animal that crossed my path, nurse them back to health, and then (reluctantly) find them a new home. Whether it was discovering abandoned newborn kittens or volunteering in Thailand at a nature park for abused elephants, I always felt that these animals came into my life for a reason and I had a duty to help however possible.

Then came the day that (I thought) I was ready for a puppy. Well, I was in my third year of med school and on top of my incredibly busy schedule, I was completely sleep deprived for weeks. I had tangled hair, dark, puffy eyes and a big fat smile on my face. She was an absolute rascal but I just couldn’t get enough of those gorgeous brown eyes. Thankfully over the past couple of years her interests have shifted from terrorizing to snuggling, and I feel grateful every day that I made the decision that I did.

Here are a few things that Nala has taught me over the years:Kyla Kremblewski with dog
• Be patient. Boy did she ever test this attribute.
• Forgive. No matter how many socks she eats, I let her know it’s not okay, and then I let it go.
• Don’t be afraid to be yourself. I’m pretty sure animals don’t have a critical inner voice.
• Be present. Our pets aren’t dwelling over past events or worried about the future, they are simply content with their mid-day nap.
• At the end of the day, what really matters are the people you love and come home to.
• Walk in nature. Remember to stop & smell the roses (and every tree, stick, and patch of grass!)
• Drink water and eat simply. All you need is good, wholesome food & as much water as you’d like.
• Affection goes a long way. Animals don’t need to understand our language. They can sense our emotional state and simply ease tension with their affectionate presence.
• Don’t judge. No matter how your day went, your pet doesn’t judge you. In their eyes, you can do no wrong.
• Happiness is contagious. When you are greeted with an excited, tail-wagging pup, it’s almost impossible not to smile.
• Play. You are NEVER too old to play and be silly, so liberate yourself!
• Always keep learning. You can definitely teach an old dog new tricks! Keep open-minded and willing to learn new things in life- it keeps your brain stimulated and sharp.
• Nap. Listen to your body and always rest when you need to.
• Everything will be ok. The sun will always come out tomorrow. : )

Animal lover or not, we can all learn a thing or two from our furry friends. Nala has taught me some of the most important and simple lessons in life and for that, I am forever grateful.

In health and happiness,
Dr. Kremblewski
