When people make dietary changes, one of the most difficult meals to contend with is often breakfast. Most North American breakfast staples like cereal, toast, bagels and muffins are packed with common allergens (like gluten, dairy and soy), cause blood sugar imbalances and frankly, aren’t that filling.
Years ago, I would begin my day by eating a bowl of ultra low-fat cereal. By the time I reached my desk at work, I was starving! Then I was doomed to succumb to more snacking (and more guilt) throughout the day.
I always encourage clients to think outside the box and release the idea of ‘breakfast foods’. Sure, smoothies, omelettes and whole grain porridges are good options, but anything can be breakfast – soup, lean fish or tofu with veggies, last night’s leftovers, stews and more.
Though it involves getting a little creative and breaking from traditional dietary patterns, it’s utterly possible to create amazing, healthful and satiating breakfasts. The key is choosing breakfast foods that contain complex carbohydrates, nourishing fats and lean protein, which will keep your blood sugar balanced and provide you with the nutrients you need to go about your day.
This quick kale and broccoli bowl is one of my favourite things to eat in the morning. It’s fast food at its finest. Even with the chopping, this will take about 10 minutes from fridge to table. The vitamins and minerals are off the charts here, and with the extra special combo of healthy fats you will definitely feel satisfied.
You’re welcome to add more vegetables to this, a poached egg, a heap of beans, or a few ounces of lean meat or fish.
Enjoy!
