That’s right, good old vitamin A.
When you think of this vitamin, what comes to mind? I’ll tell you what I think of:
• Healthy glowing skin
• Strong hair, teeth and bones
• Improved vision and overall eyesight
• Thriving immune system
Vitamin A is a powerful antioxidant that helps protect cells from cancer and other diseases and it is necessary in new cell growth. So to simplify, just remember A = Anti-Aging.
Whenever you hear the word beta-carotene, you are on the right track. When we consume foods containing this compound, it is converted into vitamin A in our liver.
Remember that vitamin A is fat-soluble, so it can accumulate and become toxic to the body if taken in excessive amounts and especially for those with certain medical conditions, in pregnancy, as well as heavy smokers (talk to your Naturopathic doctor to see what dose is right for you). With that being said, a great way to get a safe and effective dose of vitamin A is through your diet.
Here are some foods that are high in vitamin A:
• Yellow/orange fruits & veggies: apricots, cantaloupe, carrots, papaya, peaches, pumpkins, red & yellow peppers, sweet potatoes, yams & yellow squash.
• Green veggies: Asparagus, beet greens, broccoli, collards, dandelion greens, kale, spinach, spirulina, swiss chard, turnip greens & watercress
• Animal livers & fish liver oil
And yes, the old saying is true, “you are what you eat”. If you eat too many carrots, your skin will turn orange (that’s the beta-carotene!). So, MY saying is “everything in moderation”. 😉
